Penile Prosthesis
Penile prosthesis is suitable for men with erectile dysfunction who have failed or have contraindications to oral tablets, vacuum erectile devices or penile injection. It is also suitable for men with erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease (penile curvature). The older prostheses are semi-rigid or malleable. Newer devices come in 3 piece and are inflatable to mimic the normal penis in it’s flaccid and erect state. Today’s implants are truly advanced medical devices, offering a safe and efficacious option for men to resume a normal, spontaneous sex life.
What is an inflatable penile implant?
An inflatable penile prosthesis (implant) is a three piece device consisting of 2 penile cylinders, a scrotal pump and a reservoir, all connected by reinforced tubings. The 2 cylinders are placed into the shaft of a man’s penis, which provides consistent erections through a saline pump mechanism .. The device is made of Bioflex®, a biopolymer material, and filled with sterile saline (salt water) fluid. The device operates by shifting fluid from one part of the implant (reservoir) to another (cylinders) in order to make the penis erect. The implant does not make the penis larger or longer. It only allows the penis to function again. Also, the implant does not change the way a man urinates or ejaculates.
