UROLIFT

The UroLift System is a new, minimally invasive treatment for men with urinary symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is generally performed as a day procedure and it involves placing 2-6 non absorbable permanent sutures into the prostate gland internally using a specially designed delivery device. The sutures lift the prostatic urethra apart to widen the urinary outflow channel. There is no cutting, heating or removal of prostate tissue hence the recovery is quick.

Because UroLift is a new device, the long-term outcome is still uncertain but early results are promising. Early worldwide trials have shown an improvement in International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Quality of Life (QoL) and urinary flow rates.

The major advantages of the UroLift system are:
  • fast recovery and return to normal function with minimal down time
  • preservation of sexual function such as ejaculation, orgasm and erection
Side effects are often mild and temporary (most resolve in 4-6 weeks). They include:
  • pain or burning with urination, blood in urine, pelvic pain, urgency of urination

  • Step 1: The UroLift delivery device with a visualization instrument is carefully placed through the urethra to access the enlarged prostate.
  • Step 2: Small UroLift implants are permanently placed to lift or hold the enlarged prostate tissue apart and widen the prostatic urethra. Typically 4-6 implants are placed per patient, but it can vary from patient to patient.
  • Step 3: The UroLift delivery device is removed, leaving a wider urethra. Note the bladder neck ( important in preserving ejaculation) and external sphincter (important in preserving continence) are preserved.
